OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/11/2026, officers with the Sulphur Police Department in Sulphur, Louisiana, attempted to stop a black Mercedes passenger car. The driver continued west on Interstate 10, leading officers across the Louisiana-Texas state line into Orange County. According to authorities, the pursuit entered Texas at approximately 9:40 p.m.
After exiting Interstate 10 at Exit 877 in Orange, the Mercedes attempted to negotiate the Adams Bayou turnaround while traveling at a high rate of speed. The vehicle crashed through a guardrail, rolled down an embankment, and entered Adams Bayou, where it became fully submerged. Officers immediately attempted to rescue the occupants but were unable to reach them before the vehicle sank. Dive teams later recovered the vehicle from the bayou.
Justin Vanover, 38, of Georgia, was identified as the driver. He died at the scene. A passenger, 25-year-old Jermaine Glodd of Lake Charles, Louisiana, also died in the crash. Orange Police handled the crash investigation after the pursuit crossed into Texas, while the Sulphur Police Department confirmed the pursuit originated in Louisiana. Authorities have not publicly identified the officers involved in the pursuit or indicated that any pursuit intervention techniques, such as a PIT maneuver or spike strips, were used.
