On 07/06/2026, Columbus County Sheriff's Office deputies attempted to stop 20-year-old Coleton Michael Newman, who was operating a motorcycle in Bladen County, North Carolina. Authorities have not disclosed the reason for the attempted stop. Newman continued riding, leading deputies on a pursuit. At approximately 5:03 p.m., while traveling through the intersection of North Carolina Highway 87 and Kennedy Store Road, Newman rear-ended a Toyota, was thrown from the motorcycle, and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Toyota was transported to Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Newman was later identified as a U.S. Army soldier stationed at Fort Bragg. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
