OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 05/23/2026 at approximately 6:16 p.m., a California Highway Patrol officer assigned to the Bakersfield Area Office observed a white 2018 Land Rover commit a traffic violation near the intersection of Scodie Avenue and Dunwood Street in the Kern Valley area. The officer attempted to conduct an enforcement stop, but the driver, later identified as Ashot Geboyan, continued driving away while the CHP officer pursued.
The pursuit continued southbound on Sierra Way toward Lake Isabella. Investigators reported that Geboyan drove at a high rate of speed as he approached a curve near Stine Cove. He failed to safely negotiate the curve, causing the Land Rover to leave the roadway, travel airborne over a dirt embankment, and enter Lake Isabella. The SUV became completely submerged, and Geboyan did not exit the vehicle.
CHP officers, Kern County firefighters, and search-and-rescue personnel responded immediately and began recovery operations. Divers searched the lake through the evening. At approximately 2:51 a.m. on 05/24/2026, recovery crews located the submerged Land Rover and removed it from the lake. Geboyan, who was the sole occupant, was found inside the vehicle and was pronounced dead.
