On 07/11/2026, an Elko Police Department detective and a member of the department's Crime Suppression Unit were conducting surveillance on Michael Kimery, who was wanted in connection with a reported stolen vehicle and was also under investigation in a sexual assault case. Officers conducted a traffic stop near the Ryndon exit on Interstate 80. According to police, Kimery produced a handgun and threatened to kill himself. The driver of the vehicle was removed to safety while the Elko Police SWAT Team and Hostage Negotiation Team responded. Negotiators spoke with Kimery for several hours in an attempt to persuade him to surrender. Police stated they eventually deployed chemical agents in an effort to end the standoff, after which Kimery died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the vehicle. The incident remains under investigation.
