On 07/14/2026, Kanawha County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a reported stabbing at a residence on Wills Creek Road in Chelyan. Police reported finding two adults with serious stab wounds. One victim, 49-year-old James Canterbury, later died from his injuries, while a second victim was hospitalized. Jason Sims, 41, remained inside the residence, prompting a standoff involving the Kanawha County Sheriff's Office SWAT Team and crisis negotiators. During the standoff, police deployed K-9 Jett into the residence. Police claim Sims fatally stabbed the dog. Officers then entered the residence, where police claim Sims advanced toward them while armed with a knife. Officers shot and killed Sims. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The West Virginia State Police are investigating the shooting. Authorities have not released the identities of the officers who fired their weapons. K-9 Jett was transported to an emergency veterinary hospital but died from the stab wounds.
