On 07/15/2026, Asheville Police Department officers responded at approximately 1:57 a.m. to 38 North French Broad Avenue after a caller reported that a person was firing a gun in the parking lot of a downtown business. Police claim officers heard gunfire when they arrived and found the man actively firing a weapon. Officers opened fire, striking and killing him. Asheville Fire Department personnel pronounced him dead at the scene. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the police shooting, and the man’s body was sent to the North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy. Authorities have not disclosed the man’s identity, age, race, the number of officers who fired, how many shots police discharged, whether officers issued commands before shooting, or whether police body-camera footage recorded the encounter. This was the third shooting involving Asheville police during 2026.
