OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/10/2026 at approximately 9:35 a.m., West Virginia State Police troopers responded to South Preston Highway in the Tunnelton area after receiving a report that 33-year-old Joshua Tyler Roberts had threatened a neighbor with a machete before returning to his residence.
Troopers found Roberts seated inside a Chevrolet van and armed with a firearm. According to West Virginia State Police, troopers repeatedly directed Roberts to put down the weapon. Police stated Roberts raised the firearm toward the two responding troopers, and both troopers fired their service weapons, striking him. Roberts died at the scene.
The shooting occurred in the Irona area south of Kingwood. Terra Alta Ambulance responded to the scene, and West Virginia State Police secured the residence and vehicle while investigators documented the shooting and collected evidence.
Roberts was born on 12/04/1992 in Kingwood. His family described him as an outdoorsman who enjoyed kayaking on the Cheat River, hiking, camping and spending time with his family and cats.
