OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/17/2026, Alton Police Department officers responded to the 600 block of Leonard Street after reports of a shooting inside a residence. Police determined that John W. Booth, 44, had been fatally shot, and Derek A. Scroggins, 48, remained barricaded inside the home. Officers established a perimeter, and a SWAT team responded as negotiators attempted to persuade Scroggins to surrender. A woman inside the residence escaped safely during the standoff. After officers heard a single gunshot from inside the home, the SWAT team entered and found Scroggins dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Illinois State Police are investigating the incident.
