On 07/19/2026, Toledo Police Department officers responded to a Marathon gas station at 801 South Detroit Avenue after receiving reports that a man was pointing a handgun at people in the parking lot. Officers arrived and encountered 37-year-old Deangelo Fields.
According to investigators, officers issued commands during the encounter before opening fire. Fields was struck by police gunfire. Officers rendered emergency medical aid at the scene until Toledo Fire and Rescue personnel arrived. Fields was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
On 07/22/2026, the Lucas County Coroner's Office identified the man as Deangelo Fields, 37. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation assumed responsibility for the investigation into the shooting at the request of the Toledo Police Department. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
