OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/17/2026, Sunnyside Police Department officers responded to the 1000 block of East Edison Avenue after receiving reports of an armed man barricaded inside a residence. Officers attempted to negotiate with 27-year-old David Lopez Vargas for several hours while surrounding the home.
During the incident, Lopez Vargas exited the residence armed with a firearm. An exchange of gunfire followed, during which one Sunnyside police officer was struck and seriously injured. Officers returned fire, striking Lopez Vargas. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The injured officer was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for treatment and was later reported to be in stable condition. The Yakima Valley Special Investigations Unit assumed responsibility for investigating the shooting. The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave pending completion of the investigation, consistent with department policy.
