On 07/14/2026, federal agents with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) conducted an immigration enforcement operation at a gas station and convenience store along State Road 16 in St. Augustine, Florida, shortly before 7:00 a.m. Four men were inside a vehicle when they encountered the federal agents. The tractor-trailer driver immediately stopped and attempted to render aid. The roadway was closed for several hours while investigators documented the scene. She said Coronilla Duran was the father of two children, had entered the United States legally on a tourist visa approximately three weeks before his death, and had been in Florida for only two days before the incident occurred. She stated that he had come to the United States seeking work.

The death occurred during a week in which multiple fatal incidents involving ICE operations drew national attention. Immigration advocacy organizations called for an independent investigation into the St. Augustine incident, arguing that aggressive enforcement operations can create panic that contributes to dangerous situations. Federal authorities have not alleged that Coronilla Duran committed any violent offense, and no criminal charges involving him were announced following the incident.
