OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/20/2026, at approximately 8:30 p.m., Willoughby Hills Police Department officers responded to Bishop Park Apartments in the 27700 block of Bishop Park Drive after reports that a 27-year-old armed man had fired multiple rounds through the door of an occupied apartment and attempted to kick the door open. Three people, including a small child, were inside the apartment but were not injured.
When officers arrived, they encountered the man near the front entrance of the apartment complex. After a brief confrontation with responding officers, the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No officers fired their weapons.
The incident remains under investigation by the Willoughby Hills Police Department. Police Chief Matthew Naegele commended the responding officers and thanked the Wickliffe and Willowick Police Departments for providing immediate mutual aid during the incident.
