On 07/23/2026, Boise Police Department officers responded after Daniel Alfons Konovalov called 911 and reported that he was suicidal, armed with a knife, and wanted to die. Officers located him near South Cloverdale Road and West Overland Road, close to a canal and a Chevron gas station, prompting the nearby business to go into lockdown as a precaution. One of the responding officers was assigned to the department's Behavioral Health Response Team and was accompanied by a civilian behavioral health specialist. Officers attempted to de-escalate the encounter through conversation and retreated as Konovalov displayed a knife. Police then deployed a 40 mm less-lethal impact munition, but it was unsuccessful. According to investigators, Konovalov continued advancing toward the officers while holding the knife, and two officers fired their service weapons, striking him.
Officers immediately provided emergency medical aid until additional first responders arrived, but Konovalov was pronounced dead at the scene. The Ada County Coroner later identified him as 32-year-old Daniel Alfons Konovalov. The Ada County Critical Incident Task Force, led by the Meridian Police Department, is conducting the independent investigation. The two Boise officers involved were placed on administrative leave in accordance with department policy while investigators review body camera footage, witness statements, forensic evidence, and other evidence.
