On 07/23/2026, Topeka Police Department officers responded to reports of a woman armed with a large knife near the intersection of Southwest 6th Avenue and Southwest MacVicar Avenue. Officers attempted to resolve the encounter before the situation escalated. According to investigators, Jessica Treat, 41, remained armed with the knife during the confrontation. Officers ultimately opened fire, striking Treat.
Officers rendered medical aid at the scene until emergency medical personnel arrived, but Treat was pronounced dead. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation later identified her as Jessica Treat of Topeka. The KBI is leading the independent investigation into the shooting, while the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
