On 07/03/2026, Boone County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a report of a domestic disturbance with shots fired at a residence in the 8600 block of Lely Court in Florence. According to authorities, 37-year-old Dustin James Zink was armed with a handgun and threatening himself and others inside the home.
Deputies attempted to negotiate with Zink and de-escalate the situation. According to the Kentucky State Police, Zink fired his weapon during the encounter, and deputies returned fire, striking him. Deputies and emergency medical personnel rendered aid, but Zink was pronounced dead at the scene.
Zink was an off-duty Florence Police Department officer. The Kentucky State Police are conducting the independent investigation into the shooting. The deputies involved have not been publicly identified, and the investigation remains ongoing.
