OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/02/2026, Stevens County Sheriff's Office deputies responded after reports that an armed man had fired at two children riding a four-wheeler and later confronted another individual with a handgun. Deputies obtained a warrant and responded to a residence at 7292 K Highway 291 in Tum Tum.

According to investigators, 82-year-old Blaine Branham exited the residence carrying a handgun. Deputies issued repeated commands for him to drop the weapon. Authorities stated that one deputy deployed less-lethal impact munitions in an attempt to gain compliance, but Branham continued advancing and then raised the handgun toward deputies. Multiple deputies opened fire, striking him.

Deputies rendered emergency medical aid until additional first responders arrived, but Branham was pronounced dead at the scene. The Washington State Patrol is conducting the independent investigation into the shooting. The deputies involved have not been publicly identified.
