OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/22/2026, deputies with the Bexar County Sheriff's Office Top Offenders Program (STOP), assisted by investigators from the Sheriff's Office Child Safe Unit, arrived at a residence on Gristmill Way in far west Bexar County to serve an arrest warrant obtained during a child sexual abuse investigation. Homeland Security Investigations also assisted in the investigation. the man had been a former law enforcement officer from another state. The warrant was being served by the Bexar County Sheriff's Office STOP (Sheriff's Top Offenders Program) together with investigators from the Child Safe Unit. Investigators alleged the abuse began in another state and continued after the man moved to Texas. He was accused of molesting 3 girls, all under the age of 14.

As deputies approached the residence, they heard a single gunshot from inside the home. Deputies entered and found the 71-year-old man suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. They immediately attempted lifesaving measures until EMS personnel arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Sheriff Javier Salazar, the investigation began after allegations that the man had sexually abused three girls younger than 14 years old. Investigators alleged the abuse began in another state before continuing in Bexar County. The Child Safe Unit obtained an arrest warrant charging the man with sexual abuse of a child younger than 14, a first-degree felony under Texas law. Sheriff Salazar stated the man was a military veteran and had previously worked in law enforcement in another state.

The Bexar County Sheriff's Office classified the death as a custodial death because it occurred while deputies were attempting to execute an arrest warrant. Multiple internal units are conducting reviews of the incident in addition to the criminal investigation.
