On 07/20/2026, Vallejo Police Department officers responded to a report of an armed carjacking in the 400 block of Ryder Street. Officers later located the reported vehicle near Mahogany Drive and Broadway Street, approximately three miles from the reported carjacking. Officers conducted a felony traffic stop after locating the vehicle.
According to police, the driver immediately fired at responding officers during the traffic stop. Officers returned fire, striking 44-year-old Rommel Delfin Querol. Officers provided emergency medical aid until paramedics arrived, but Querol died at the scene. A firearm was recovered during the investigation.
The Solano County Major Crimes Task Force is leading the criminal investigation into the shooting. Vallejo Police Department also retained an independent investigator to conduct an administrative review, and the department's Critical Incident Review Board will examine the tactics, supervision, training, and overall response to the incident. City officials announced that a public town hall meeting would be held to discuss the shooting after the initial investigation.
