OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/21/2026 at approximately 8:20 a.m., Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a Walmart located at 6005 South Eastern Avenue after reports of an armed man involved in a fight inside the store. During the altercation, the man named Travis Ward fired a handgun, striking another person. Officers arrived within minutes and located the armed man inside the store.
According to Las Vegas Metropolitan Police, officers confronted the man inside the Walmart after he continued moving through the store while armed. During the encounter, Officer Matthew Robinson fired his weapon, striking the man. Officers immediately secured the scene and summoned medical personnel. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. The civilian who had been shot before officers arrived was transported to a hospital for treatment.
The Clark County Coroner had not publicly released the decedent's identity at the time of the latest official update. Investigators recovered a handgun from the scene and processed evidence throughout the store. Detectives interviewed numerous employees and customers who witnessed portions of the incident and collected surveillance video from inside Walmart.
LVMPD identified the officer who fired as Officer Matthew Robinson, who had approximately six years of service with the department. He was placed on routine paid administrative leave while the investigation proceeds, consistent with department policy.
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Force Investigation Team responded to conduct the criminal investigation. The Clark County District Attorney's Office will review the completed investigation to determine whether the use of deadly force complied with Nevada law. A Critical Incident Review will also be conducted by LVMPD following completion of the criminal investigation.
