OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/24/2026 at approximately 3:38 p.m., Fremont Police Department dispatch received multiple 911 calls reporting a man carrying an apparent firearm and a duffel bag inside a senior living facility in the 3800 block of Walnut Avenue. Callers reported the man was inside a meeting room with two people. Multiple Fremont police officers responded to the scene.
According to Fremont Police, officers located the man inside the facility holding what appeared to be a firearm. During the encounter, officers fired their weapons, striking the man. Officers rendered medical aid until Fremont Fire Department personnel arrived. The man was transported to a local hospital, where he died. The two people reported to have been inside the room were not physically injured.
Subsequent reporting indicated the incident occurred at or between the Aegis Living and Carlton Senior Living facilities. Initial reports described the event as involving two hostages; however, investigators have not publicly confirmed the circumstances surrounding the reported hostage situation or whether the firearm recovered at the scene was an actual firearm or a replica.
Because the shooting resulted in a death involving law enforcement, the California Department of Justice Police Shooting Investigation Team assumed the criminal investigation pursuant to Assembly Bill 1506. The California Attorney General's Office announced it will independently investigate the shooting and submit its findings to the California DOJ for review.
