OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/09/2026, deputies with the Russell County Sheriff's Office responded to a residence on New Garden Road near Honaker after reports of a shooting. Officers found 45-year-old Larissa Caldwell suffering from a gunshot wound. During the law enforcement response, Walter E. Yates died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the scene. Caldwell was pronounced dead from her injuries. The Russell County Sheriff's Office requested the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation to conduct the investigation. Authorities later identified Walter E. Yates as the deceased individual who died by suicide during the police response. The investigation remains under review by Virginia State Police.
