On 07/23/2026, Holmes County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a 911 call from Steve Smith's daughter, who reported that her father was intoxicated, had allegedly fired a gun in the direction of her and a friend, and had made suicidal statements. Deputies arrived at Smith's residence on Alex Brown Road near Bonifay shortly after 11:20 p.m. The daughter told the responding deputy that Smith had gone back inside the home. According to the sheriff's office, when the deputy attempted to make contact with Smith, a physical confrontation occurred. Police state that Smith then reached into his waistband, produced a handgun, and pointed it at the deputy. The deputy fired, striking Smith. Additional deputies secured the scene and provided emergency medical aid until Holmes County EMS arrived. Smith was pronounced dead from his injuries. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement assumed the independent investigation, and the sheriff's office stated that the encounter was captured on the deputy's body-worn camera, with video expected to be released.
