Deputies responded, and Georgia State Patrol troopers and Georgia Department of Public Safety Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers also responded to assist.
When law enforcement arrived, 58-year-old Mark Alderman was outside the residence armed with a long gun. Officers gave verbal commands for him to drop the weapon. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Alderman refused to comply, raised the firearm toward deputies and troopers, and fired at them. Several Georgia State Patrol troopers returned fire, striking Alderman multiple times. No law enforcement officers were struck.
Law enforcement officers rendered medical aid at the scene until emergency medical personnel arrived. Alderman was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His body was taken to the GBI Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.
At the request of the Brooks County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia State Patrol, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation assumed the independent investigation. Upon completion, the case file will be submitted to the Southern Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for prosecutorial review.
