OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/26/2026 at approximately 3:45 a.m., a Florida Highway Patrol trooper observed a Chevrolet Traverse traveling 74 mph in a posted 45 mph zone on State Road 54 near New Port Richey. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the 15-year-old driver continued driving away while the trooper pursued. During the pursuit, the Chevrolet reached speeds of approximately 115 mph.
Near State Road 54 east of Old County Road 54, the trooper performed a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver. The Chevrolet rotated onto the south shoulder, where it struck a utility pole and then a tree.
The vehicle was occupied by the 15-year-old driver and a 15-year-old male passenger, both from New Port Richey. Neither occupant was wearing a seat belt. Troopers reported alcoholic beverages were found inside the vehicle. Both teenagers sustained serious injuries and were transported to a local hospital. The passenger later died from his injuries.
The 15-year-old driver remained hospitalized with serious injuries. The Florida Highway Patrol stated criminal charges are expected against the driver upon completion of the investigation.
