OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/26/2026 at approximately 1:25 a.m., a Jefferson Police Department officer attempted to stop a vehicle. The driver continued driving away while the officer pursued. Deputies from the Greene County Sheriff's Office responded to assist with the pursuit.
The pursuit ended when the vehicle lost control and entered a ditch near the intersection of 245th Street and L Avenue in Greene County. The driver immediately exited the vehicle armed with a knife and advanced toward the Jefferson police officer. The officer fired his weapon, striking the driver. Despite being shot, the driver continued advancing and stabbed the officer in the face.
Law enforcement officers rendered lifesaving aid to the driver at the scene. He was later pronounced dead. The injured officer was transported to Greene County Medical Center, where he was treated and released. The officer was placed on critical incident leave in accordance with department policy.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation assumed the investigation at the request of the Greene County Sheriff's Office. The investigation includes the actions of the involved officer, witness interviews, physical evidence, and the circumstances surrounding the pursuit and shooting. When completed, the investigative findings will be submitted to the Greene County Attorney's Office and the Iowa Attorney General's Office for review.
