On 07/04/2026, at approximately 1:21 a.m., a Lakewood Police Department officer saw a vehicle traveling at high speed westbound on South 74th Street in Tacoma. The officer pursued the vehicle as it continued west at high speed. The driver lost control near 3600 South 74th Street and crashed into a railroad-crossing signal structure. The vehicle caught fire, and the collision ejected the passenger and driver. Both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene. Police reported that fireworks may have been inside the vehicle’s trunk but had not determined whether they contributed to the fire. The Tacoma Police Department investigated the fatal crash.
