OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/28/2026, 48-year-old Brian P. Conrad of Hancock was shot and killed by an Adams County Sheriff's deputy during a confrontation at a residence in the Town of Leola. Deputies responded to a report involving an armed individual. According to the Adams County Sheriff's Office, Conrad was armed with a handgun and repeatedly ignored commands to drop the weapon. During the encounter, a deputy fired his service weapon, striking Conrad. Deputies immediately rendered first aid while Waushara County EMS, which had been staged nearby because of the high-risk nature of the incident, responded to the scene. Despite lifesaving efforts, Conrad died at the scene. Investigators recovered a handgun next to him. The Adams County Medical Examiner's Office identified the decedent after notifying his family. The Columbia County Sheriff's Office is leading the independent investigation, with assistance from the Sauk, Marquette, Waushara, and Juneau county sheriff's offices. Upon completion of the investigation, the findings will be submitted to the Adams County District Attorney's Office for review.
