OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/24/2026, Smith County Sheriff's Office deputies attempted to serve a felony warrant from Choctaw County on Kevin Clay Adams in the Polkville area. According to authorities, Adams resisted arrest, returned to his vehicle, and fired multiple shots at deputies before fleeing into nearby woods as deputies returned fire. A multi-day manhunt involving the Smith County Sheriff's Office, U.S. Marshals Task Force, and other law enforcement agencies followed. On 07/27/2026, investigators developed information that Adams was hiding inside a horse trailer near Highway 13. Law enforcement established a perimeter and attempted to communicate with him. During the standoff, officers heard a single gunshot from inside the trailer. Adams was subsequently found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident.
