On 07/27/2026, officers with the Riverside Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle for a vehicle code violation near Kaiser Permanente Riverside Medical Center. As officers approached the stopped vehicle, the driver accelerated away. Officers began pursuing the vehicle. Seconds later, the driver struck pedestrian Peter Mullis as he was walking near the medical center after returning from lunch. Mullis, a 42-year-old radiographer in Kaiser Permanente's Orthopedics Department, was transported into the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The driver fled the scene but was arrested the following day. Police identified the driver as Gene Amos Cunningham, 62, who was booked on suspicion of murder and felony hit-and-run resulting in death. Authorities said Cunningham was on parole and had outstanding felony warrants at the time of the incident.
