OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/28/2026 at approximately 10:50 a.m., a Lincoln County Sheriff's deputy attempted to stop a vehicle driven by John D. Wallace after observing multiple traffic violations. Wallace continued driving away while the deputy pursued him. The pursuit traveled south on County Highway K from Lincoln County into Marathon County, and the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office requested assistance from the Marathon County Sheriff's Office.
At approximately 12:16 p.m., Wallace's vehicle left the roadway and crashed near the intersection of County Highway K and Rainbow Drive in the Village of Maine. Deputies from the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office and Marathon County Sheriff's Office approached the vehicle and found Wallace dead inside.
The Lincoln and Marathon County sheriff's offices requested the Wood County Sheriff's Office to conduct an independent investigation. A preliminary autopsy determined Wallace died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Wisconsin State Patrol and the Marathon County Medical Examiner's Office assisted in the investigation.
