On 07/28/2026, 31-year-old Wilburn died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a police pursuit in Starkville, Mississippi. At approximately 2:30 a.m., Starkville Police Department officers attempted to stop Wilburn's vehicle after observing erratic driving. Wilburn continued driving away, initiating a pursuit through the city. The pursuit ended near Louisville Street and Highway 182 after Wilburn stopped his vehicle. Officers surrounded the vehicle and repeatedly gave commands while attempting to take him into custody. Before officers could make contact, Wilburn shot himself with a handgun inside the vehicle. Officers immediately approached, removed him from the vehicle, and rendered emergency medical aid until paramedics arrived. Wilburn was transported to OCH Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities stated that no law enforcement officers fired their weapons during the incident. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was requested to conduct the independent investigation. The Oktibbeha County Coroner later identified the decedent only as 31-year-old Wilburn. The investigation remains ongoing.
