On 07/29/2026 at approximately 6:30 p.m., Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to multiple reports of an armed man beneath the Interstate 10 Freeway near the intersection of Normandie Avenue and Washington Boulevard in the West Adams area of Los Angeles. Callers reported that the man was armed with a baseball bat, was threatening pedestrians, and had struck occupied vehicles with the bat.
Officers located the man beneath the freeway overpass while he was still holding the baseball bat. According to LAPD Capt. Mike Bland, the man continued swinging the bat at bystanders and officers after police arrived. During the confrontation, officers fired their weapons, striking the man. The department has not disclosed how many officers fired or the number of rounds discharged.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded after the shooting. Video recorded by a nearby resident showed firefighters performing CPR before transporting the man to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The shooting occurred in a busy commercial area beneath the freeway overpass. A Metro bus remained stopped inside the crime scene while detectives processed evidence. Investigators also examined a damaged minivan believed to have been struck during the incident. Nearby residents reported hearing multiple gunshots while children were playing outside.
The Los Angeles Police Department's Force Investigation Division responded to investigate the shooting. The investigation includes review of body-worn camera recordings, witness statements, physical evidence, dispatch recordings, and the actions of the involved officers. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office will also review the shooting following completion of the investigation.
