OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/30/2026 at approximately 5:51 p.m., Waukesha police responded to a reported hostage incident inside the Meijer store at 801 East Sunset Drive. Police reported that a man armed with a knife threatened multiple people inside the store and held another person against his will.
Police entered the store and confronted the man while he continued holding the hostage. Police fired their weapons, striking the man. Officers took him into custody and emergency medical personnel transported him to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The hostage sustained injuries and was also transported to a hospital. Initial information released by police stated the injuries were not life-threatening. Witnesses reported that the incident moved through several areas of the store before officers confronted the man. Some witnesses stated a customer attempted to intervene before police fired, although authorities have not confirmed those accounts.
