On 07/18/2026, Nebraska City Police Department officers arrested Jackson Kelly, 23, on a charge of first-degree sexual assault. As officers arrived at the Nebraska City Jail, Kelly escaped from custody and ran to a nearby residence, where he barricaded himself inside. The Nebraska State Patrol SWAT Team responded and attempted to negotiate with Kelly for several hours. After Kelly failed to respond, SWAT officers entered the residence and found him in the basement with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating the incident.
