On 08/01/2026, at approximately 7:33 p.m., a Freestone County Sheriff's Office deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver continued driving away while police pursued. The pursuit lasted approximately 26 minutes and reached speeds exceeding 125 mph before ending on the side of Farm to Market Road 488 near Fairfield. Police reported a physical altercation occurred between the deputy and the driver after the vehicle stopped. The deputy fired, striking the driver. First responders provided lifesaving measures before the driver was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Three passengers in the vehicle were not injured. The deputy sustained minor injuries. The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting.
