On 08/01/2026, at approximately 7:45 p.m., San Antonio Police Department officers responded to the 600 block of Aurora Avenue after a 911 caller reported that a man was standing in his front yard waving a handgun. Officers encountered the 69-year-old man and repeatedly ordered him to drop the weapon. According to police, the man briefly appeared as though he might comply but continued holding the handgun. Five officers then opened fire, fatally wounding him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators reported that the handgun recovered at the scene was loaded and that there is no evidence the man fired the weapon. The officers were placed on administrative duty pending separate criminal and administrative investigations. On 08/03/2026, the department identified the involved officers as Joshua Rodriguez, Aldamaris Flores, John Reyes, Luis Cortes Garcia, and Richard Julien. The officers had between less than one year and less than five years of service with the department.
