On 07/31/2026, at approximately 6:16 p.m., officers with the Maryland-National Capital Park Police responded to Fort Washington Park after receiving reports of an active shooter. Officers encountered Turell Delonte Campbell, who police reported was armed with a handgun. During the encounter, an officer fired, striking Campbell. Officers recovered a handgun at the scene and Campbell was pronounced dead. The Maryland Office of the Attorney General's Independent Investigations Division assumed responsibility for the investigation, with assistance from the U.S. Park Police because the shooting occurred on National Park Service property.
