On 08/03/2026, at approximately 3:00 a.m., a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper attempted to stop a vehicle in Amarillo. The driver continued driving away while DPS pursued. Publicly available information has not yet disclosed the reason the trooper initiated the pursuit. The pursuit ended near Skyline Drive and Angelus Drive, where an encounter occurred between the driver and troopers. According to DPS, the man was armed with what appeared to be an assault-style rifle when troopers opened fire, fatally wounding him. The Texas Rangers are conducting the investigation. No body-camera or dash-camera video has been released, and no findings regarding the use of force have yet been announced.
