On 08/03/2026, Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office deputies attempted to stop a vehicle for reasons that have not yet been publicly disclosed. The driver continued driving away while deputies pursued into neighboring Tangipahoa Parish. The pursuit ended after the vehicle crashed on Louisiana Highway 40 just south of Independence. Deputies attempted to take John Granger III into custody, and a physical struggle followed. According to investigators, Granger gained control of a deputy's Taser and used it against the deputy. Deputies then fired their weapons, fatally wounding him. He died at the scene. The Louisiana State Police Bureau of Investigations was requested to conduct the investigation.
