On 08/03/2026, Polk County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a McDonald's restaurant on U.S. Highway 98 North in Lakeland after receiving reports that a man armed with a handgun was threatening customers. Deputies located Larry Riles in the parking lot. According to investigators, Riles fired at deputies during the encounter. Deputies returned fire, striking him. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement assumed the investigation into the shooting.
