On 08/05/2026, members of the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office attempted to serve a felony arrest warrant on 45-year-old Derek Robert Martin at a residence near North Fourth Street and East Iowa Avenue in Spirit Lake. Deputies established a perimeter around the residence and attempted to take Martin into custody.
According to the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office, Martin was armed with a firearm during the encounter. A police K-9 was deployed as deputies attempted to arrest him. Investigators said Martin shot the K-9, seriously injuring the dog. Deputies then fired their weapons, striking Martin.
Deputies rendered emergency medical aid until emergency medical personnel arrived. Martin was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured K-9 was transported for emergency veterinary treatment. Authorities reported the dog survived surgery and was expected to recover. No deputies were reported injured during the incident.
The Idaho Critical Incident Task Force, led by the Coeur d'Alene Police Department, assumed responsibility for the investigation. Detectives are reviewing body-worn camera footage, physical evidence, forensic evidence, and witness statements. The Kootenai County Coroner's Office will determine the official cause and manner of death.
