On 08/02/2026, Hanover County Sheriff's Office deputies attempted to apprehend 24-year-old Ryan Floegel of Mechanicsville, who was wanted on outstanding felony charges. Deputies located Floegel driving a vehicle and attempted to stop him. Floegel continued driving away while deputies pursued.

During the pursuit, deputies used a Precision Immobilization Technique maneuver to stop Floegel's vehicle. After the vehicle came to a stop, deputies approached and found Floegel suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Deputies and emergency medical personnel attempted lifesaving treatment, but Floegel died from the gunshot wound. No law-enforcement officer fired a weapon during the encounter.
