OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/07/2026, at approximately 8:00 a.m., members of the U.S. Marshals Service Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located 41-year-old Charles Glenroy Smellie Jr. driving a white 2026 BMW 330i on Interstate 95 in Baltimore County. Smellie was wanted in connection with a homicide investigation being conducted by the Prince George's County Police Department.
U.S. Marshals attempted to stop Smellie, but he continued driving away while federal officers pursued. The pursuit traveled on I-95 into Harford County and then onto Maryland Route 152. Members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force notified Maryland State Police about the pursuit as it entered Harford County.
The pursuit ended near the entrance to Aberdeen Proving Ground. By the time Maryland State Police troopers arrived, the pursuit had ended and emergency medical personnel were already at the scene. Smellie, who was alone in the BMW, was found with a gunshot wound and pronounced dead. Investigators determined that the wound was apparently self-inflicted. Maryland State Police reported that no law-enforcement officers fired their weapons.
Prince George's County Police identified Smellie as the person they were seeking in connection with the 08/06/2026 killing of 41-year-old Malcolm King of Silver Spring. King had been found shot to death outside in the 6900 block of Stoddert Lane in Landover. Investigators said they believed the shooting resulted from a business-related dispute.
Smellie's body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy. The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit is investigating his death. Troopers from the Bel Air Barrack, Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division, Aviation Command and Criminal Enforcement Division Northern Region assisted, along with the Harford County Sheriff's Office and Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division.
