Event : Passenger killed by police chase crash

OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/07/2026, at approximately 3:15 a.m., a passenger was killed when the vehicle in which the passenger was riding crashed at Granby Street and Beverly Avenue in Norfolk after having been pursued by Norfolk Police Department officers earlier that morning.

Norfolk Police said officers determined that the vehicle was stolen and pursued it. Police subsequently terminated the pursuit, and the pursuing officers lost contact with the vehicle before the crash. Authorities have not disclosed where officers initially encountered the vehicle, how long or how far the pursuit continued, the speeds reached during the pursuit, or the specific circumstances that caused officers to terminate it.

A short time after police terminated the pursuit, a witness saw the vehicle leave Granby Street, strike a tree and catch fire and called 911. Norfolk Police and Norfolk Fire-Rescue responded. The passenger and driver were both pronounced dead at the scene. Police said preliminary evidence indicated speed was a factor in the crash.

The Norfolk Police Department Traffic Unit is investigating the fatal crash. As of 08/08/2026, police said identification of both people killed remained inconclusive and had not released either name.
