OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/05/2026, shortly after 3:00 p.m., a San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department detective was conducting what the department described as a follow-up criminal investigation near Avenue R and 130th Street East in the Littlerock area east of Palmdale. Authorities have not publicly disclosed what crime the detective was investigating or why he contacted the man who was subsequently killed.

During the encounter, the detective and the man exchanged gunfire. Both were struck. The man died at the scene, while the detective suffered a gunshot wound just below his rib cage and was airlifted to Antelope Valley Medical Center. He underwent surgery and was subsequently reported in stable condition and expected to recover. Sheriff Shannon Dicus described the detective as being in his 30s and a 12-year veteran of the department.

Video from the scene showed a white SUV with shattered windows and apparent bullet strikes. Propane tanks and what appeared to be a long gun were visible inside the SUV. An unmarked San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department vehicle also showed apparent gunfire damage. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said investigators recovered a weapon from the dead man's vehicle.

Authorities have not yet released a detailed reconstruction explaining what initiated the gunfire, who fired first, how many rounds each person fired, or the precise circumstances under which the detective shot the man.
