OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/05/2026, shortly after 8:00 p.m., Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a home in the 2900 block of Hope Valley Street in unincorporated West Palm Beach after the mother of an 18-year-old man requested a welfare check. According to Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, the mother told authorities that her son was acting strangely and irrationally and that she believed he had taken an unknown substance.
At approximately 8:15 p.m., two deputies arrived and heard screaming from inside the home. They entered through the front door and encountered the 18-year-old in a physical struggle with his mother and father while holding a kitchen or butcher knife with an approximately five-inch blade. According to Bradshaw, the father and son were struggling for control of the knife.
Deputies ordered the 18-year-old to drop the knife. One deputy deployed a Taser, but it did not stop him. According to the Sheriff's Office account, the struggle continued and the 18-year-old eventually had his father pinned on the ground while still holding the knife. Bradshaw said he appeared positioned to stab his father. The second deputy then fired three shots, striking the 18-year-old in the torso. The entire encounter from the deputies entering the home until the shooting reportedly lasted approximately 90 seconds.
Deputies provided medical aid until Palm Beach County Fire Rescue arrived. The 18-year-old was transported to a hospital, where he died from his gunshot wounds. His father was also hospitalized with a hand injury sustained during the struggle.
The Sheriff's Office has not publicly identified the 18-year-old, citing Marsy's Law. The deputy who fired the three shots and the deputy who deployed the Taser also have not been publicly identified in the reporting located. Both deputies were placed on administrative leave. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Palm Beach County State Attorney's Office and PBSO Violent Crimes Division are investigating the killing.
