On 08/06/2026, law enforcement officers responded in the morning to a residence in the 300 block of Hazel Boulevard in Millville following a reported domestic disturbance involving 47-year-old Shaun Murphy. Officers surrounded the residence, and neighbors described the police presence developing into a standoff lasting several hours.

Neighbors reported seeing officers positioned around the property with firearms drawn. Police used a loudspeaker to communicate with someone inside the house, asking the person to come outside and indicating that they wanted to make sure he was OK. One neighbor said police arrived at approximately 8 a.m.; the situation continued until around 1 p.m., when emergency medical personnel arrived and the atmosphere at the scene abruptly changed.

During an encounter with Murphy inside the residence, Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office Sgt. John Borelli fired his department-issued firearm, striking Murphy. Murphy was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators recovered a handgun from the residence.

The New Jersey Attorney General's Office is investigating Murphy's killing under the state law requiring the Attorney General to investigate deaths occurring during encounters with law enforcement. As of 08/08/2026, investigators have released Murphy's and Borelli's identities but have not released a detailed reconstruction of the shooting.
