On 08/09/2026, 68-year-old Lee Murray was shot and killed by Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies Michael J. Burgio and Scott M. Wolf at the Super 8 by Wyndham on Lehigh Station Road in Henrietta, New York, after deputies responded to reports that Murray was suicidal and experiencing a mental health crisis.

At approximately 3:53 p.m., the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office received 911 calls concerning a suicidal man at the motel. Deputies responded and encountered Murray, who authorities said was holding a box cutter and apparently attempting to harm himself.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, deputies repeatedly ordered Murray to drop the box cutter. Police alleged that Murray did not comply with those commands. Deputies Burgio and Wolf then fired their service weapons, striking Murray.

Emergency medical personnel attempted lifesaving measures, but Murray died at the scene. Authorities reported recovering a box cutter following the shooting.

Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies Michael J. Burgio and Scott M. Wolf were identified as the two deputies who fired their weapons at Lee Murray. Both were placed on administrative leave following the shooting. No criminal charging determination has yet been announced.
