On 08/08/2026, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Golden Police Department officers responded to a Circle K on West Colfax Avenue west of C-470 after receiving reports of a man with a handgun. Initial reporting did not establish whether the man had threatened anyone or what conduct prompted the call beyond the report that he possessed a handgun.

According to Golden police, officers contacted the man outside the gas station and the man allegedly fired at officers. Police reported that one Golden officer was struck by gunfire. Officers returned fire, striking and killing the man at the scene. The wounded officer was transported to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

The Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the fatal police shooting as an outside investigative agency pursuant to Colorado law.
