On 08/10/2026, an unidentified 20-year-old man was shot and killed by a Longmont Police Department officer during a domestic-related disturbance and reported hostage situation in the 2300 block of Bluebird Drive, near Creekside Drive and Eagle View Circle in Longmont, Colorado.
The Longmont Emergency Communications Center received a call reporting a disturbance at approximately 2:27 p.m. Three Longmont police officers arrived at approximately 2:36 p.m.
According to Longmont police, officers encountered the 20-year-old man and determined that he had allegedly taken another person hostage. Police said the man repeatedly told officers that he had a gun. Authorities also said the man was involved in a pending Boulder County criminal case involving the same person who police identified as the hostage.
Police reported giving the man multiple commands during the encounter. According to police, he did not comply with those commands. At approximately 2:45 p.m., one Longmont police officer fired at the man, striking him.
Medical assistance was requested approximately three minutes after the shooting. The man was transported to a hospital, where he subsequently died from his injuries.
nitial public accounts do not establish whether investigators recovered a firearm from the man or provide a detailed description of his actions immediately before the officer fired. Police statements that he had taken a person hostage and said he possessed a gun remain law-enforcement allegations at this early stage of the investigation.
The 20th Judicial District Critical Incident Team is conducting the independent investigation into the fatal shooting. Longmont Police Department personnel are not participating in that investigation. The officer who fired the fatal shot was placed on paid administrative leave pursuant to department policy.
